Entering the College Football Playoff, Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield is completing over 70 percent of his passes for the Oklahoma Sooners.
The heat map image below provides some context for that number, showing where each of his completions occurred. Each completion was marked at the point the receiver caught the ball—regardless of what happened after the catch.
- Mayfield clearly favors the right side of the field, primarily because that’s where Marquise Brown lines up. Brown led the team with 51 targets and 38 receptions on the right side of the hashmarks this season.
- Brown was also Mayfield’s favorite target in the screen game, hauling in 16 receptions at or behind the line of scrimmage.
- The screen game is definitely a part of Oklahoma’s offense (23.5 percent of Mayfield’s completions were behind the LOS) but not because Mayfield isn’t capable of the downfield pass. 41.5 percent of Mayfield’s completions traveled at least 10 yards past the LOS.
- Mayfield’s average completion traveled 8.9 yards past the LOS. His average attempt was 11.4 yards past the LOS.
