Notre Dame’s game plan was clearly simplified for Malik Zaire, but he was remarkably efficient at what Brian Kelly asked him to do.

Zaire attempted just three passes beyond 15 yards from the line of scrimmage (all three were incomplete) but he was a perfect 12 for 12 on pass attempts within 15 yards.

Notre Dame clearly trusted Golson more when it came to throwing the ball, as eight of his 11 attempts traveled at least 10 yards through their. Golson’s stats don’t appear terribly efficient, but he was hurt by two drops and was pressured on four of 11 dropbacks.

For LSU, the strategy was to keep the ball out of Anthony Jennings hands whenever possible, and for good reason. Jennings caused more trouble for himself than the Notre Dame defense, as he ran himself into pressure three times. He was also quick to panic, throwing the ball away three times in situations after passing up opportunities to salvage the play.

The box score stats look great for Leonard Fournette, but the numbers were slightly skewed. 89 of his rushing yards came on an untouched run through the middle of the Notre Dame defense, and he added another 18 on a run early in the first quarter. His other nine attempts resulted in just 36 yards, with 14 yards after contact.

Anthony Jennings was a non-factor in the running game, rushing seven times for nine yards (slightly skewed by an eight-yard loss when he fell down).

Notre Dame controlled the clock for much of the game due to their success running the ball on third and fourth down. On 11 rushing attempts on third and fourth down, the Irish converted five times (four by Zaire).

Tarean Folston was the workhorse for Notre Dame, with limited success. He managed just 35 yards on 14 first-down rushing attempts, and was stuffed at or behind the line of scrimmage four times.

Notre Dame managed to keep the ball from Travin Dural, LSU’s top receiver, as he failed to haul in either of his two targets.

The Irish leaned heavily on Will Fuller, as he was the target on nine of the team’s pass attempts (five by Golson, four by Zaire). Four of Fuller’s targets came on third and fourth down, resulting in two first downs and a touchdown.

Prosise, Carlisle and Brown were featured heavily on the shorter targets by Zaire, hauling in 10 of their 12 targets combined.

LSU’s offensive line was nearly flawless on 15 pass plays. Anthony Jennings ran himself into two hurries and one hit, with La’el Collins allowing the only other pressure.

Notre Dame held strong as well, with a stellar performance by left tackle Ronnie Stanley. The play of the game was arguably his block on a third-and-long play in the second half in which he managed to hold off his initial assignment and a delayed blitz, allowing Golson to extend the drive.

Notre Dame safety Max Redfield was flying all over the field in this one and made multiple tackles to save potential big plays in the running game.

Jaylon Smith was helping out Redfield, for the most part, but his three missed tackles were a blemish on an otherwise strong game from the linebacker.

LSU’s defense racked up 16 missed tackles by 10 different defenders. Jamal Adams and Kendell Beckwith led the way with three apiece.

Danielle Hunter was the bright spot for LSU on the defensive side, recording eight tackles including four at or behind the line of scrimmage.

Notre Dame didn’t shy away from Jalen Collins, targeting the LSU cornerback seven times. Collins allowed five catches for 58 yards, including two contested catches.
