The numbers for Cardale Jones and Blake Sims were similar, and fairly pedestrian overall. However, the major difference came in their ability to handle pressure. Sims completed just four of 12 passes under pressure for a total of 23 yards. Jones, on the other hand, completed eight of 12 for 115 yards, including a touchdown.

It was all Ezekiel Elliott all day long. Even before his 85-yard touchdown run he was averaging over seven yards per attempt. And his 4.3 yards after contact per attempt was not inflated by the long run, as he went the distance untouched.

Derrick Henry was effective for Alabama, but as they trailed the entire second half, his opportunities were limited down the stretch.

Jones and Elliott forced a combined 12 missed tackle, compared to just four for the Alabama runners.

As expected, Amari Cooper was the workhorse for Alabama, hauling in a game-high eight receptions. But Ohio State was able to limit the big plays, as he averaged just 8.3 yards per reception.

Devin Smith was targeted just four times for Ohio State, as Michael Thomas stepped up as the go-to receiver for Jones. Thomas hauled in seven receptions on nine targets, including three contested catches.

Both offensive lines struggled, as all 10 starters allowed at least one hurry, hit or sack. The worst of group were right tackles Daryl Baldwin of Ohio State (seven hurries) and Austin Shepherd of Alabama (three hurries, one sack).

Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson nearly completed a perfect game in pass protection, until letting Steve Miller slip by him on the final play of the game.

Both front sevens were successful at wreaking havoc in the backfield in passing situations, led by Ohio State’s Joey Bosa who recorded six pressures (five hurries, one hit).

Perhaps the most telling stat of the game is the fact that two of Alabama’s three leading tacklers reside in their secondary. Elliott plowed through the front seven, forcing the secondary, led by Landon Collins, to step up and save even bigger plays from developing.

Cyrus Jones did his best to slow down the Buckeyes passing attack, allowing just three receptions on eight targets. Despite an average target depth of 21 yards, Jones allowed a total of just 35 yards on the day.

The Buckeyes did the majority of their damage against Eddie Jackson, who allowed over one-third of the yards the Buckeyes picked up through the air.

Ohio State overcame mediocre performance from their corners Eli Apple and Doran Grant, in part due to their safeties Vonn Bell and Tyvis Powell, who combined for more interceptions (two) than catches allowed (one).
